The Sikkim government has officially recognized this peak as a popular destination for trekking and climbing. It provides access to beautiful lakes, snow-capped mountains, and stunning landscapes. At 6010 meters, Mt. Tenchenkhang has been praised by climbers for its thrilling ascent and offers magnificent views of the Himalayas and Mount Makalu in Nepal. This spot is considered one of the best for mountaineering in Sikkim.
Frey Peak, an impressive mountain close to Rathong Glacier and near the Kabru sister peaks, including Kokthang and Rathong Peak, offers a challenging trek through Frey Glacier. The route is predominantly rocky, with occasional snow-covered sections. The peak is named after the renowned climber George Frey, who made an attempt to climb it with Tenzing Norgey. As a tribute, the base of the peak still holds his axe and crampons. Trekkers can experience the stunning natural beauty of the area along the trail.
The expedition made sure to leave the mountain in pristine condition and brought back and disposed of all non-biodegradable items. The organizer provided major group equipment such as carabiners, ice bars, deadman anchors, climbing ropes, ice axes, ascenders, descenders, and crampons, all meeting international climbing standards. The vertical climb of over 90 degrees was managed using fixed ropes and ice screws according to the plan.
